GE Tax Calculator

The Grand Exchange takes 2% of every sale from the seller — rounded down, capped at 5m per item, with a handful of exemptions. Type in your numbers and see exactly what you keep.

How the GE tax works

Since the 2021 update (bumped from 1% to 2% in 2023), the Grand Exchange charges the seller 2% of the sale price, rounded down. Three exceptions:

  1. The 5m cap. Tax maxes out at 5,000,000 gp per item — anything selling at 250m or more pays exactly 5m, so the effective rate on the most expensive items is under 2%.
  2. Cheap items. Sales under 50 gp pay no tax at all.
  3. The exempt list. A fixed set of items pays no tax at any price — bonds, low-level ammo and runes, common food, energy potions, standard teleports and basic tools. The full list is below.

This matters for flipping because the buyer pays the listed price but the seller only keeps 98%. A spread that looks profitable can lose money after tax — which is why every margin on this site, from the price tracker to the flip picks, is shown after tax.

Tax-exempt items

These items never pay GE tax, at any price:

Common questions

Who pays the tax, buyer or seller?

The seller. The buyer pays the listed price in full; the tax comes out of what the seller receives.

Is the tax visible in game?

Yes — the GE interface shows the after-tax amount when you set up a sell offer. This calculator just lets you do it before you're standing at the exchange.

Does the tax stack per item or per offer?

Per item, and the 5m cap is also per item. Selling 100 items at 300m each pays 5m tax on each one, i.e. 500m total.

Don't want to do the math at all?

Flippy already did it — after-tax margins on every tradeable item, and flip picks graded in public.
